Artist's Statement
Mary Lou Johns is a part-time resident of Breckenridge where she has been a member of Women of Watercolor for over 10 years. Her watercolors are inspired by the majestic scenery of Summit County, Colorado. Her paintings have been displayed at the Speakeasy Theatre, the Breckenridge Theatre Gallery, and at “Meet the Artists,” as well as in the Arts Alive! Gallery where she is a member.
She also spends time in Evanston, Illinois and Ontario, Wisconsin. The rural scenery of southwestern Wisconsin has provided continuing inspiration for her barn series. In the Chicago area, she is a member of the North Shore Art League and has studied with Peggy McNamara and James Wisnowski. In Colorado she has studied with Ann Weaver, Randy Hale, and Kate Kiesler.
Mary Lou’s watercolors are largely representational, with occasional forays into soft-focus florals. She enjoys painting in plein air with other artists. Her artistic method is to capture the scene in a pencil drawing, then add and take away to create a pleasing composition. She hopes that viewers will feel the love in the mountain scenery, as she does.
In addition to her passion for art, Mary Lou is a certified Life Coach. She works with individuals and groups in the areas of career change and development, creativity, goal achievement, and relationships.
